Men’s Team
Division 4 league, round 1, Ballycomoyle v St Joseph’s, Sunday 13th February
2011 at 11.00am in Ballycomoyle. Referee: Hugh Nolan. Conditions were heavy
and muddy but the sun did shine, however both teams found it difficult to get a
rhythm going and a draw was the fairest result. The end result was Ballycomoyle
0.7 and St Joseph’s 0.7. Ballycomoyle line out was as follows Brendan Doyle in
goals, Damien Clogher, James McHugh, Robbie Cooney, Chris Lawlor, Keith Weldon,
Brian Caffrey(1), Midfield was Jim Ward (Capt) and Billy Ryan (1) with forwards
of John Coyle (1), Jamie Ward, John Ward, Shane Reilly (1), Damien Fagan and
Stephen Bardon (3), subs Niall McKenna, Joey Williams (replaced Bill Ryan),
Brian Smith (replaced John Ward) and Stephen Reilly. St Josephs were dominant
in the first Half and opened their account in the 7th minute with a fine point.
Stephen Bardon squared the game up in the 14th minute with a point from a free.
John Ward was replaced by Brian Smith when he picked up an injury in the 20th
minute. Both teams struggled to score until St Josephs secured their second
point on the 28th minute. John Coyle quickly equalised the game in the same
minute with a fine point from play. St Josephs found a burst of energy coming
into the injury time and scored an additional 3 points with one coming from a
free which left the half time score at Ballycomoyle 2 points v St Joseph’s 5
points.
Second Half: 3 minutes into the
second half Jim Ward drove a long ball from a free into Stephen Bardon who was
fouled, Bill Ryan squared up and shot a fine point from an angled approach, this
was followed a Brian Caffrey point scored from play in the 8th minute. Bill
Ryan picked up an ankle injury in the 9th minute which resulted in Bill having
to be taken off with Joey Williams coming on. St Joseph’s weren’t gone home at
this stage and returned with a point in the13th minute. Shane Reilly had a goal
opportunity in the 16th minute but unfortunately it was just beyond his reach,
Shane quickly made up for this by scoring a point 2 minutes later. 25 minutes
into the second half Ballycomoyle were presented with a second goal chance and
numerous shots taken were blocked by the St Joseph’s keeper and backs, a
subsequent close range free was presented to Ballycomoyle which Stephen Bardon
popped across the black spot with ease. Both teams were now on an equal pegging
at 6 points and only 5 minutes remaining in normal time. The intensity of the
game was well on the increase as both teams now knew either could have the
spoils if they pushed hard enough. St. Joseph’s continually fought back and
finally scored a point in the 27th minute, however this was controversial and
the Referee had to consult with both umpires and finally instructed the white
flag to be raised. Ballycomoyle were now down by 1 point despite their
efforts. However, our lads did not give up and fought back and secured a free,
under pressure and on the stroke of full time Stephen Bardon stepped up and took
an excellent point to square up the score line. Both teams battled hard in
injury time to secure the win, however Ballycomoyle showed great spirit to fight
of the St Joseph’s attacks to secure the draw.
We hope John Ward and Bill Ryan will
make a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing them back on the training
pitch shortly. We have to mention the fact we had three debuts in Brendan Doyle
in Goals, Chris Lawlor in the half back line and John Coyle in the half forward
line, all three had an excellent game in their respective positions. It’s
important to remember that this was their first game at adult level and
Balllycomoyle have a bright future ahead if these performances are anything to
go by. Training Continues every Monday and Friday night and all players are
asked to make the effort to attend. We’re off to a good start so let’s build on
it.

The men’s team training started back on Monday 17th January 2011 at 7.45pm and

January 2011
Attendees at this meeting ratified the executive committee for 2011. In
addition to regular items on the agenda there was a lot of discussion around sub

participate and any help would be hugely appreciated. If you’d like to take
part in any of the sub committees please let a member of the executive committee
know.
Courses
Code of ethics course is scheduled for end of January and we’d like for anyone
taking charge of younger teams to attend if at all possible.
Sports first
aid course will be taking place over the next couple of weeks and anyone
interest please contact Helen Coyle for either courses for more information,
