Sponsored Cycle July 2008

Photos index. Click to see a slide show of this event on YouTube

Despite the very adverse weather conditions on Sunday July 6th 2008, over forty people assembled (which included two ladies, Angela McNicholas and Doreen Farrelly) at Fore Abbey car park and set off on our gruelling 50km cycle. We departed at 12 noon in the middle of a heavy shower but luckily enough the rain eased off by the time we hit Hounslow, from Hounslow it was an almost constant pull up until we reached the summit at Loughcrew and then we had the quick descent into Dromone. We had a short break in Dromone for water and oranges and unfortunately as we took to the road the rain bucketed down again. We landed at Skerries Cross and took a left turn and headed towards Kells. When we reached Baile-Fomhar we took a right turn and went for Glenidan where we had our next scheduled pit-stop. Mary Doyne had sandwiches laid on for us and they were much appreciated. After watching the first half of the Munster Final we took to the road again and headed to Drumcree and onwards to Collinstown. This section of the journey proved the most challenging with a serious pull until we reached the Hill of Collinstown. We took the last of our scheduled stops in with Kathryn in The Lough Lene Inn and Kathryn also had sandwiches and cocktail sausages laid on, which again were greatly appreciated. It is amazing how hungry and thirsty a person can get when they are taking part in such a cycle.!!. After watching the first half of the Leinster Final we set of on the final leg of our journey which brought us to "Weldons Cross", from where we took a left and back down into Fore Village. We were greeted back in Fore Village by a large number of people who cheered us home. The rain came down again but that did not dampen the spirits at this stage as we had two Bar-b-Ques at full steam. Overall this was a very enjoyable outing and credit must go to all involved. We would must thank all those who took part in the cycle which included Cathal Morgan, Noel Morgan, Damien Fagan, Cían Farrelly, Brendan Halpin, Ray Farrelly, Michael Halpin, Robbie Cooney, Colm Dermody, Paul Molloy, Derek Cheevers, Seamus Farrelly, Ronan Fagan, Tom Fitzpatrick, Clodagh O'Neill, Doreen Farrelly, Angela McNicholas, Anne Dermody, Eddie Boylan, Raymond Halpin, Pat Shryanne, Marius Reilly, John Corrigan, Seamus Fay, Sean Dermody. We also must thank our support crews which included Seamus McDermott and Gerry Farrelly, Maureen Fay, Maureen Masterson, Aishling Brady and Michael McCormack. We also thank our two great cooks Seamus Coyle and Doreen Farrelly and finally we thank Mary Doyne, Kathryn Cooney and Ita Halpin who looked after us so well. Our prize winners were Sinead Fitzpatrick, Mickey Crone, Tossy Brady and Sharon Blacoe. Finally to all our sponsors, we have to say thank you very much and we are happy to report that quite a nice sum of money was raised for this event.
