2006
County Final
Ballycomoyle
Finally Lift The Cup.
Tuesday
5th September saw our under 12 girls in their third final in a row.
There were great expectations that amends were going to be made for the
disappointment of the pervious years. The team played against the
wind in the first half and that coupled with strong opposition saw them in
arrears at half time The Downs 1-2 Ballycomoyle 0-1. There were a few
positional changes made at half time. A tense and exciting second half saw
the girls work hard in every corner of the field, Jane Coyle scoring a
point shortly after the interval and then after ten minutes came the goal
from Sinead Connell to draw level. Shortly after that came another
point to go ahead. A spell of severe pressure ensued from The Downs
which saw them level the game once again.
With ten minutes to go Sinead hit the target with a superbly taken
goal. But the game wasn't over at that. Anne Marie Boylan had
to pull off a crucial save to deny The Downs from drawing level.
The Downs did, however, hit target to put just two points between the
teams. The girls from Ballycomoyle played with greater determination
and urgency as the game went on. One last point from Ballycomoyle
ensured the victory.
Great credit is due to each and every one of these players that never
tired during the game and gave of their very best throughout the game,
showing great chara cter in the second half to come from behind and win
the game. Thanks to all the supporters who made the trip to St. Lomans to
cheer these girls on. It was great to see such a huge attendance
(even if some were delayed with the traffic on the way in to the pitch).

The Seán Coyle Cup

Until 2003 no cup existed
for the girls under 12 "B" or "C" competitions in Co.
Westmeath. The Ladies County Board decided to put this situation
right. Shandonagh club offered to sponsor the cup for the B competition
and the Coyle family
sponsored the above cup on behalf of Ballycomoyle in honour of Seán who had died in 2001 and who,
with his wife Claire, was very much involved in starting Ladies Football
in Ballycomoyle
Seán's daughter Karen was Ballycomoyle captain on the day in 2004 that
the club made it's first attempt to win the cup. In 2005 his daughter Jane
was captain when we again saw it slip away. This year 2006 is the
last year in which one of Seán's daughters could have captained an under
12 team and Jane was very proud to hold his cup high in the Downs on Sept
5th 2006. |
